Hope Grows in the Natural State with Fifth Annual Arkansas Earth Day Festival and Concert this Saturday

LITTLE ROCK, AR (April 22, 2008) The Arkansas Earth Day Foundation, in partnership with the William J. Clinton Foundation, will host the fifth annual Arkansas Earth Day Festival and Concert on Saturday, April 26.

This year's free, rain-or-shine festival is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the William J. Clinton Presidential Center and Park. The free concert begins at 7 p.m. at The Arts Scene in North Little Rock. The 2008 theme is "What Can YOU Do?," giving attendees positive and simple ideas for greening their lifestyle.

The festival is designed to educate and energize individuals, businesses and government to take responsibility for a clean and healthy environment. With fun and interactive experiences ranging from healthy food options to eco-friendly shopping opportunities, the festival aims to motivate all Arkansans and their families to take positive action for our environment while celebrating Earth Day.

"As volunteer-executive director for the past five years, it is exciting to see the festival continue to grow exponentially each year. In 2004, the Festival attracted 300 attendees, and we are expecting more than 15,000 this year,” said April Ambrose, founder of the Arkansas Earth Day Foundation. “Remember, hope grows with each of us!"

The festival will feature more than 85 booths including interactive/hands-on activities for all ages; freebies; hand-made arts and crafts; live animals; health and wellness and green products and services; local foods; games; environmental video and survey projects; and a showcase of green actions and ideas by governments, non-profits, businesses, schools, churches, and individuals. The children's area will include bicycle rodeo (safety training), recycled crafts, big bubbles, large art project/mural, energy bike and a green playhouse. Additionally, “One Million Things You Can Do,” a video where children interview other children about green actions and how they can make a difference and live green, will play throughout the festival.

In addition to a day of activities, be sure to check out the "Innovate or Die Competition" award-winning Aquaduct bicycle which is a three-wheeled mobile filtration vehicle that is designed to both transport and filter up to twenty gallons of water in developing countries where access to clean water is unavailable. The team that created this prototype bicycle will be on hand to demonstrate how the bike works and to answer your questions.

Additional activities include green building tours of the William J. Clinton Center and Heifer International's headquarters, both of which are LEED Platinum-certified buildings. Keep Little Rock Beautiful will be hosting its Great American Pick-Up during the festival as well. They will meet in front of the Peabody hotel at 2:45 p.m. The cleanup will begin at the Riverfront Park and will end at the Clinton Center. Thousands of pieces of energy-efficiency literature from the Arkansas Energy Office and hundreds of trees from the Arkansas Forestry Commission will be given away.

What can attendees bring? Sustainable Alternatives, in conjunction with Goldman Recycling, Keep Little Rock Beautiful and Ron Meyers and Associates, will be accepting the following recyclable items this year at Arkansas Earth Day: plastic bottles and containers, aluminum and steel cans, paper and cardboard, plastic shopping bags and dry cleaning bags, batteries, cell phones and printer and toner cartridges. In addition, the Shred Smart truck will be on site to shred any confidential papers to later be recycled. In the spirit of Earth Day, attendees are encouraged to bring refillable water bottles for personal hydration, as a main water source will be available for water refills. In addition, attendees are encouraged to use alternative transportation to and from the festival like: city bus, trolley, bicycle, walk/run, alternative fuel vehicle (electric, biodiesel, ethanol, hybrid, etc.), or car-pool. Pets on leashes, folding chairs and spending money are all things attendees are encouraged to bring. Photos and videos of attendees may be used for future promotional purposes.

AED's official merchandise includes items that help people to live more green including: ChicoBags (reusable shopping bags that stuff into a tiny sack which attaches to a purse or fit in a pocket), t-shirts (organic cotton with UV sensitive ink that is only readable in the sun), necklace medallions that can be planted to grow forget-me-not flowers, recycled newspaper pencils, and so much more.

The evening concert (7-11 p.m.) at The Arts Scene will provide a stimulating program of musical acts, eco-friendly fashions, beverages from local breweries and wineries, and sculpture from local artists. The event is aimed at inspiring the diverse groups of Arkansas's young adults to take a moment to learn ways to be green and have a fun night. Concert attendees will learn where to buy eco-friendly clothing and cosmetic products with the opportunity to have the option to indulge in eco-friendly beer and wine – all while listening to some great local rock, rap, jazz, hip hop, and acoustic sounds while observing the best impromptu sculpture. The concert will be limited to adults ages 18 and up, for a five-dollar entry fee.

As a Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) Lead Agency, Arkansas Earth Day's Fifth Annual Festival and Concert will mobilize more than 600 young people and other volunteers to participate in the 20th Annual GYSD, Friday, April 25 through Sunday, April 27, in Little Rock. This is the 20th Annual GYSD, which is the largest youth service event in the world, and is produced with State Farm Companies Foundation and Youth Service America.

Arkansas Earth Day Foundation is a non-profit local coalition of concerned families, inspired seekers, elected leaders, and responsible businesses working to increase community awareness of environmental issues and access to sustainable solutions through education, events, recycling, networking, products and services. The first Arkansas Earth Day Festival was held in 2004 with an attendance of only 300; the festival has since grown exponentially to nearly 10,000 attendees in 2007. Founded by April Ambrose in collaboration with the Arkansas Center for the Study of Integrative Medicine, Arkansas Earth Day Foundation began as Conway Earth Day Foundation. The non-profit organization has no paid employees and produces the Arkansas Earth Day festival each year with college interns and volunteers.
