A Meeting, a Movie and a Movement

Ways to stay cool in August

Wednesday, August 6: Help Plan our October Community Event
This will be our initial meeting to discuss time, place, theme and format for an event similar to our Sustainability Forum last October.  A one-hour meeting starting at 6:30 pm at Trillium Park, 1160 Hogan Lane in Conway.  Bring your ideas, questions and cooperative spirit and be a part of the team that helps sponsor this creative, empowering convergence!

Thursday, August 7: Go To a FREE Movie

Playing at Market Street Cinema at 1521 Merrill Drive in Little Rock (http://www.marketstreetcinema.net/map.html) from 7:00-8:30 pm: “Fighting Goliath”.  Produced by the Redford Center and Alpheus Media and narrated by Robert Redford, the film describes how grassroots efforts were successful in stopping the construction of 8 coal plants in Texas.  On hand will be speakers with details about the proposed coal plant in Hempstead County .  See the full page ad for the movie night in this week’s Arkansas Times and check out a preview at http://www.fightinggoliathfilm.com/.  Spread the word!  Who would like to carpool?

Saturday, August 9:  Carpool to the Hope Watermelon Festival

The “Fighting Goliath” film will be shown on this day in Hope, the county seat of Hempstead County .  Join the crew of volunteers needed to pass out information about the coal plant and the film screening in Hope that weekend.  To join in on the trip to Hope please contact James Burke at burke@ecoconservation.org or 336-455-1065.

(See http://nonewcoaltees.com/ for another way to contribute to the campaign to place a moratorium on new coal-fired power plants in Arkansas .  All profits go to the campaign.)

Tuesday, August 12: Show Your Support for Sustainable Transportation at the Conway City Council meeting

The City Council of Conway will consider two important resolutions proposed by Mayor Tab Townsell. Mayor Townsell proposes that the city's portion of the projected revenue from the natural gas severance tax (estimated to be at least $236,488 for Conway in 2009) be dedicated to developing, operating and maintaining means of alternative transportation, including but not limited to sidewalks, bike routes and trails and public transit.  The second resolution will propose that Conway use these funds to put a special effort into becoming a Bicycle-Friendly Community, an official designation of the American League of Bicyclists. See: http://www.bikeleague.org/programs/communities/

Becoming such a community involves developing a master bicycle plan, with designated routes, trails, law enforcement and educational efforts.

Both these resolutions constitute a far-reaching sustainable vision for Conway !

Please attend and show your support for these progressive initiatives by our Mayor.  The Council meets at the Conway Distinct Court , 810 Parkway; city council committee meets at 5:30, regular city council meets at 6:30.
